Jen managed to pull Kat out of bed a few hours later. Her knees were a little shaky, but her smile was strong and sure. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been so sure of anything. She watched Kat throw on a loose white T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Jen couldn’t help but marvel with how at ease Kat was with herself and how amazing she could look with so little effort. That girl could wear a garbage bag and still look sexy, she thought. A smile crept across her face as she acknowledged the tingling fizz of excitement bursting within her chest.

Get a grip of yourself, Jen. You’re a fifty-three-year-old woman. She had to laugh at herself, part in disbelief and part in elation. She never thought she’d feel this way about anyone again. Yet here she was. Picking up one of the langoustines with the tongs, she flipped it over on the grill, listening to the sizzle as a drop of the marinade hit the coals. The fresh sea air filled her lungs. The last of daylight sparkled on the gentle tide. In this moment, in this place, with this woman, everything was right with the world.

“Have you seen the size of this lobster?” Kat came bounding out of the cottage door carrying the large dark speckled specimen in her hand. Its claws were bound with blue tape.

“Be careful with that now.” The last thing she needed was to have to spend the night in the local hospital trying to have one of Kat’s fingers reattached, she thought, only to realise how ridiculous a thought that was. There were no hospitals near them.

“Och, it’s fine. Her claws are taped. I wouldn’t be half as gallous if she was free to nip at will.”

“How do you know she is a girl?” Jen lifted the lid on the pot of boiling water that sat on the edge of the firepit. It offered a wall of heat as the coolness of the evening settled in.

Kat held the lobster and turned it over. “See here.” She pointed to the last little set of feelers on the lobster’s underbelly. “They are soft. Feel them.” She held the lobster firmly, allowing Jen to run the tips of her fingers over the translucent appendage. They were indeed soft, almost feathery to the touch, albeit they were exceptionally cold as they still held the chill from its quick blast in the freezer. “If it was a boy, then they would be hard and rough. My grandfather owned a chain of fishmonger shops in Edinburgh and we’d go through on the summer holidays and stay with them. He used to put us to work in the shops, sorting out all the orders as they arrived in from the suppliers. My mum always complained we’d come home smelling of fish.”

“Is having a female a good thing? Is the meat sweeter?” Jen watched as Kat raised her eyebrow suggestively.

“Isn’t it always?”

“Stop it. You know what I mean.
